From Games to Giving: Social Value Orientation Predicts Donations to Noble Causes
نویسندگان
چکیده
The central purpose of the present research is to examine the ability of social value orientation (i.e., prosocial, individualistic, and competitive orientation), as measured with methods rooted in game theory (i.e., decomposed games), to predict real-life prosocial behavior. Consistent with hypotheses, results revealed that individual differences in social value orientation are predictive of various donations. Relative to individualists and competitors, prosocials reported to engage in a greater number of donations, especially donations to organizations aimed at helping the poor and the ill. Results are discussed in terms of theory and methodology regarding the individual differences in social value orientation, as well as in terms of societal implications for enhancing donations to noble causes.

"Giving" in to social pressure
In light of recent evidence, we develop a theory of charitable giving in which donors feel social pressure from a direct solicitation. We show that equilibrium donations are concentrated around a social norm: donors below the norm increase giving while those above the norm reduce it. Despite a higher level of the public good, relatively poor and/or low altruism givers fare worse under social pr...

We report on the results of laboratory experiments of voluntary giving with suggested donations. Asking subjects to give the socially optimal amount reduces giving compared to no suggestion. Asking subjects not to give also depresses giving. However, moderate suggested donations produce modest positive e¤ects. We o¤er a model using the fairness equilibrium framework of Rabin (1993) that is capa...
متن کاملThe Opposite of Backlash: High-SDO People Show Enhanced Tolerance When Gay People Pose Little Threat
We tested how perceived threat to group position affects the relationship between beliefs about the acceptability of social inequality—as measured by social dominance orientation (SDO)—and discrimination. We hypothesized that high-SDO heterosexuals would respond with increased discrimination when they perceived status gains for gays. In a pilot study, we found that SDO correlated with gay preju...
متن کاملA reward prediction error for charitable donations reveals outcome orientation of donators.
The motives underlying prosocial behavior, like charitable donations, can be related either to actions or to outcomes. To address the neural basis of outcome orientation in charitable giving, we asked 33 subjects to make choices affecting their own payoffs and payoffs to a charity organization, while being scanned by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We experimentally induced a rewa...
متن کاملGiving: The Next Generation – Parental Effects on Donations
This paper provides a summary of what is known from social science research about the effects parents have on the donations of their children. It then goes on to summarize two on-going research projects. The first project provides estimates of the strength of the relationship between the charitable giving of parents and that of their adult children. The second provides estimates of the effect o...
